Premier Cho Jung-tai said Jan. 19 that Taiwan’s public and private sectors are committed to working together to strengthen relations between Taiwan and Japan.

The premier made the remarks while attending the Taipei City-based Taiwan-Japan Rotary Goodwill Association’s 2025 new year event in the capital.

The two sides have a close relationship in both government and people-to-people exchanges, as evidenced by mutual encouragement and congratulations in the 2024 World Baseball Softball Confederation Premier12 last November, Cho said. Whenever there are natural disasters like earthquakes or floods, the two countries also support each other, forming a virtuous circle, he added.

The premier went on to say that Taiwan and Japan enjoy a tight cooperation in areas spanning advanced technology and livelihood-relevant industries, as well as regional collaboration. The trade in agricultural products is thriving, he added, citing the commencement of red dragon fruit exports to Japan last year.

Regarding advanced technology cooperation, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has set up a plant in Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture, Cho said, adding that Taiwan will continue to strengthen its collaboration with Japan in the field of advanced materials and personnel cultivation.

As for regional cooperation, Cho quoted former Japanese Premier Shinzo Abe’s stress on Taiwan’s importance, adding that Taiwan’s security is an element in Japan’s security, and the country also plays a key role in maintaining Indo-Pacific peace and stability.

Cho concluded by conveying President Lai Ching-te’s hopes that the country’s public and private sectors will continue working together to deepen the Taiwan-Japan relationship, and that the two like-minded partners will strengthen their mutually beneficial ties and jointly further a fair society.
